Please share a memory of Jack to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Jack Arthur Maison of La Crescenta, passed away on March 25, 2023, at the age of 93. He was born in Bell, California on July 23, 1929, to Richard Mills and Maurieta McMullen as Glen McMullen. Given up at birth, he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Maison but as they were unable to raise him, he then went to live at the Boys Home in Chino, California. Later, he was fostered by Billie Barrett (a female jockey) until he was an adult. Jack spent his youth around the stables and horses watching his mother train. He became an accomplished rider and loved riding the hills over Burbank. They moved to Sun Valley and Jack attended K-12 in the Burbank schools. In High School, he worked weekends and holidays for the original Bob’s Big Boy as a short order cook. Jack served in the Korean War from 1950-1953 as an Army gunner. He was one of two infantry men in San Fernando Valley to receive America’s third highest combat decoration for Gallantry in Action in Korea, receiving two Silver Stars. After an honorable discharge, he eventually came to work for the Los Angeles Times as a plumber and worked there for 35 years. During that time, he met and married Marlene Kiesendahl and they bought a house in 1966 on Lowell in La Crescenta. He helped to raise Marlene’s 4 children: Cindy, Jeff, Jim, and Jerry. Jack was also deeply involved in the San Gabriel Boy Scouts organization. He served for 55 years, receiving the highest honor a council can bestow on a volunteer: A Silver Beaver. Recipients of this award are registered Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given at the council level. In addition to a certificate and medal, a white-and-blue square knot on a khaki background is presented to be worn on the uniform. During his later years he volunteered for the Veteran’s Administration, helping and guiding veterans to receive needed benefits. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. After Marlene’s passing in 2010, Jack remained in his home until 2021 where he then moved to The Senior Assisted Living Center in Pasadena where he passed away. A service will be held at Crippen Mortuary on Saturday, June 3rd at 11:00.
