A very sad day for us today, but let’s all celebrate Dominador Malit Rosacia’s colorful life! I am Imee Rosacia Tanega, the eldest niece of Uncle Doming. My late Dad, Eddie was his oldest brother out of 10 children in the family, Uncle Doming as the 6th child. I must admit that Uncle Doming and I got closer when we, respectively, arrived in the US in the early 80’s. Precious those days when his lovely family would visit us here in our house in San Francisco, and my big family would visit them in their Hollywood home, then eventually in their Glendale home. Those were the fun-filled days, our young family trips with his family , our young kids as buddy-buddies, with us even trying to squeeze ourselves in his family van, so we didn’t have to drive two separate cars. Funny how a few years ago, we all went to Vegas for the NYE celebration, with two luxury rooms…. to our surprise, he brought with him a rice cooker in their hotel room, and two cans of corned beef, and we all enjoyed a hearty breakfast when we all woke-up on that New Year’s Day! My family and I always treasured that family-bonding , simple, happy meal, straight from the can and from the rice cooker…it’s not about what we ate, but how we shared the simple food with each other, and yes, we finished everything!! That was Uncle Doming, the wealthy yet the practical one!
He was at his happiest when he reunited and bonded with relatives during our Rosacia Family Reunions. As for those who know him well, Uncle was always the life of the party, the story teller , and always had that crisp, distinctive laughter…. he could be moody, could be clever, but always remained a lovable guy, he loved to sing in his Karaoke, too...with the songs of Gary Valenciano & his good friend, Jonathan Potenciano! All these years, I still haven’t managed to cook the best Paella the Uncle Doming way…his signature dish that he used to serve us each time we are on family visits at his home! My husband and kids still savor those special flavors, which unfortunately he didn’t share with me his own recipe. Each time, I cook Paella at home, our kids would say, “Mommy, you have to say “BAM” when you put those saffron and seasonings just like your Uncle Doming does. Oh well, I did say too many BAM, BAM, BAM, but still my version of Paella doesn’t come any closer to his own cooking! I would forever be grateful that Uncle D walked me in the aisle when my husband and I renewed our vows on our 20th wedding anniversary a few years back, that was on Nov. 18, 2000….5 days after his bday… yes, he was and always been more than a Dad to me and my 3 younger sisters. He made-up for our late Dad’s shortcomings (may he RIP , too), and I am especially thankful to him for that! Proud to say that my husband Ronny and our 5 kids adored him, and that they fondly call him, the “Funny man or Kengkoy of the family”, he knew how to mingle with kids of all ages,. and could be a funny Bully, he loved to tease the kids! Up to now, my kids still fondly and laughingly remember him calling his beloved dog, a Chinese Charpe….”Tapwe, Tapwe”, up to now, we never figured-out why he called his pet dog that way….I know I should have asked him, and yes, my family still laugh and never forget about that cute pet calling..…we forgot his dog’s name, but we just know him as, “Tapwe, Tapwe!
I’ll never forget when Rainier, one of our sons got off their swimming pool during our first Rosacia Family Reunion at their house. They have this big mirror in the corner of their backyard, and he calmly said to all of us while having drinks and food at the table, “Tingnan mo ‘yan….pustahan tayo, titingin yan sa sarili niya sa salamin!” (Watch-out, I bet you, he’s going to look at himself in the mirror) True enough, our son, went straight to the mirror, looked at himself, and fixed his soaking wet hair, and made a “pa-pogi face”! Then Uncle D laughingly said, , “Sabi ko sa iyo, eh…Rosacia traits ‘yan…mahilig manalamin! (I told you so, Rosacia family are so vain and addicted to mirrors ). Damn, yes, Rainier was his inaanak, or his Godson…I guess , like Godfather like Godson, indeed! He’s one Uncle that’s always proud of his blood relatives’ accomplishments and would brag about it. A few years back, he bumped into our eldest son, Ryan, at a pharmaceutical convention, little did he know that our son has been working as a Clinical Pharmacist, at a hospital that Uncle D had his accounts with. He called me on the phone so excitedly and quipped, “Naku, proud na proud ako sa anak mo, , may PharmD degree na pala siya! Good job!” He kept me updated of other relatives' accomplishments, as well.
Auntie Christine , who is the 9th child in the family, and just in grief that she didn’t have the courage to talk about her late older brother today, has shared with me over the phone that when he was in his senior year in high school, Uncle Doming always the competitive one, wanted to be the best and the smartest in the class, but there is this female classmate of his who was also competing for that title , and smarter than him. You know what he did? He courted that smart girl , she became his girlfriend…and as expected, that love-struck girl got distracted with all her love for him….that Uncle D ended-up as the Class Valedictorian! Poor clueless girl…she probably got dumped when Uncle D went to college. Yes, he was a smarty gigolo, then!
As we all know, Uncle D is a very smart guy, he could talk about anything under the sun. Just don’t start on stock investments as that would be your whole day’s topic, if you know what I mean. From his humble beginnings, he studied hard, worked hard, and worked his way up, and got to where he wanted to go and reach! I’ve idolized him, and inspired me to invest in 401K and stocks since the 80’s, as well. You never know, maybe I’ll get as rich as him! :-) Uncle Doming was a self-made man, he reached for the stars and he achieved his dreams and goals in life, through his own sweat and tears, literally. Sometimes misunderstood, he was actually a very caring, generous, and appreciative person. If you extend him a simple gesture, he’d return your goodness ten times fold. Talking to several relatives and through private messages, it’s comforting to know that he made peace to most people, and made peace with God by the time he left us all, he showed his genuine humility that most people failed to see when he was still around. He was in total peace when he passed on! Thank you, cuzzin, Deejay for letting me say my last goodbye to your Dad , the night before he passed-away via IPad recording. I just hope that I did not raise his BP when he heard my voice and my message to him at that time. :-)
Uncle Doming indeed lived life to its fullest, he travelled far and wide, and had almost fulfilled his bucket list…geez, 80 countries he had visited out of the 120 on his list!
As we all grieve losing a very special person that has touched so many lives, has helped lots of people, had made us all laugh and smile…..let’s all learn and accept to let him go as it is now his turn to take care of his own self, to be with his deceased loved ones, and to be just our angel watching over his family and loved ones here on earth! He loved to entertain relatives, his friends and colleagues at work, but rest assured that he’s now having a nice Paella Party with late Lola Simang, Lolo Felix, my Tatay Eddie, Uncle Berting, Auntie Nita & Uncle Victor up in Heaven! With Lola’s specialty Ube Halaya, with Lolo’s signature Dinengdeng, with my Tatay‘s special Pinakbet, I am sure that they are having a cooking showdown in Heaven, I hope that God has a vegetable garden Up there! With Auntie Lulu, cousins Deejay, Megan, & Andre, grandkids Vanessa & Ethan, son in-law George, and his ex-wife, Auntie Josie ….. dear Uncle Doming, your living legacy lives on and will be your great pride and joy even in afterlife! You know you are well- loved and respected, and we will be missing your warm presence in every family events and celebrations! But we know you’ll always be there in your usual happy spirits! With the upcoming 3rd Rosacia Family Reunion in Washington, it would be a tribute to you, and will be in honor of your memory!! I love you and will be missing you a lot..... I specially dedicate to you every lyrics of the beautiful song, "Dance with my Father", and the memorable song, "My Way"...as it depicts my feelings for you and the beautiful life you've led! With much Love & Prayers to you and your beautiful family: Imee, Ronny, our 5Rs & Family (The growing Tanega Family)

Doming, we started our Pharma sales career in Davao almost at the same time. I remember you as a good sales strategist and a relentless competitor. All Reps then knew each other almost inside and out that we knew the make and colors of our cars and plate numbers even our families. You painted your car kulay “talong” or eggplant and shaved your hair just to gain attention from doctors, hospital and even industrial accounts and share of sales because your toughest competitor then had the biggest share of the market. You made sizable market share and successes and name recall with your antics and competitiveness.
We managed to keep in touch lately via a reunion in your house and since then we kept in touch even accross the seas. We met with old friends and toast to a drink and reminisce a lot of the good old days that we can’t seem to forget as it seemed to be just yesterday. Now you’re gone. I can only say, godspeed my friend. True friends never say goodbye to each other. They just take extended leaves from each other. Rest now Doming, we will see each other again sometime, somehow.
May the love of Christ be your family’s comfort and support in their grief with their loss of you. You rest now in peace my friend, rest now in peace.
- Ted Gonzales
