John was my beloved cousin (once removed - his dad was my mother's cousin). Throughout my childhood we would spend 2 weeks in Milwaukee at my grandparents, Joan and Babe Saltzstein's. John was that ideal cool, fun older cousin always ready to hoist us on his shoulders for a game of chicken or take us down to the basement to watch Petticoat Junctions while the grownups visited.
Our family gathered in Milwaukee earlier this month for a family reunion and I thought of John often over that weekend. I am so sorry to hear of his death but happy to know that he lived a life full of love and the joyful spirit I remember.

I've just learned of John's death from a classmate a few days before our 40th high school reunion. John and I went to grade school, high school and college together; as everyone knows, not only was he extremely bright but such a delight and so funny. No one could tell a story better. I am so sad he's already left this world and extend my deepest sympathy to his husband and family.

Johnny was one of my oldest and dearest friends. We met in Madison circa 1980, and have remained close through all these years, even though our friendship was mostly over the phone. I will miss him enormously, as will so many others. I will miss his laugh (guffaw, really), his intelligent and thoughtful conversation, his sarcastic wit. I will think of him every time I wear my comfy but (to him, anyway) ugly Birkenstocks. My heart is with you. I wish I could attend the memorial service.
Goodbye, Johnny, my friend.
