Doug and I made a special trip to San Antonio in 2010 or 2011 when Brian was there with Jim Patterson. Neither of us will ever forget him. He was just so friendly and laid back with no ego whatever. We must have talked for at least an hour or more about various aspects of horn playing and teaching and it was as if we'd known him for years. I still have the card he gave me along with the unexpected "Keep in touch."
I remember asking him about his cancer surgery and he said he hoped it was done with.
That makes finding this out even more heartbreaking. Doug and I extend our heartfelt condolences to all of the family.

Sean,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I used to take private lessons with Brian, and this morning - on a whim - I googled him to see what he's up to these days. It hit me like a ton of bricks to find that he had passed away.
Brian was a wonderful person - a man of integrity as well as incredible talent. He would mention you from time to time, and it was evident from his anecdotes that he loved you deeply. His face lit up with joy any time he spoke about you.
I was also impressed by his faith in Christ. He lived under grace, and never judged people or preached at them. Instead, he showed love, kindness, and generosity to all. He took great comfort in the knowledge that our Savior was always with him, through thick and thin. And on that note, I pray that God will comfort and uphold you as you grieve.
Please know that Brian is deeply missed, by many.
Heartfelt condolences,
Sarah

Dear Sean --
I heard your father speak at the International Horn Symposium last August. I was so impressed with how down to earth he was and how open to sharing his horn-playing wisdom he was. I have listened to the sound track to Crimson Tide many times.
I read your father's obituary in the IHS journal and am deeply saddened by his passing. I will miss him as a person and as a great horn player. Please know that my thoughts are with you - I am sure that you went through many ups and downs with your father's illness. I send his soul light and blessings.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Rudin
