Caroline,
May the God of all comfort give you peace as you hold onto the hope that you will see Phil again, in God's time.
Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that day,and not to me only but also to all who have loved his appearing. 2Timothy 4:8
We love you!

Sad to lose such a wonderful grandfather but glad that you are now at peace and reunited with Nanny Carol and all our loved ones who have passed before. For once, words fail me. XOXO

My uncle - Phil LaPlaca - was an extra-ordinary man that my entire family was blessed to have known. One of my favorite memories of him involved Christmas. As youngsters, I and my cousins were fortunate to have Santa Claus (aka my uncle) visit us on Christmas Eve. My uncle not only went to great lengths with the aid of my Aunt Carol to look the part in every way, but he also made sure to entertain adults as well as kids by having a different accent every year. In addition to the religious importance of that day, Christmas Eve was often an opportunity to get together with several aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandmother. He, along with my Aunt Carol, always made everyone feel as close as family ought to be.
When I in later in life had children of my own, my uncle made my kids feel as loved as he did me and my cousins when we were my children’s age. My oldest daughter loved to have her Uncle Phil swing her back and forth which he somehow managed to do for what seemed like an eternity. Indeed, he had a knack for making family friends, and neighbors - even the “challenging ones” - feel accepted.
My uncle decided to take up golf later in his life. Let’s just say that athletics was not one of the many gifts God gave him. When he played with my father, brother, and me, he took our “constructive criticism” with the good nature that seemed to be his approach to life in general. Indeed, I can’t remember any time when he wasn’t his positive, upbeat self even though there must have been days we he like most people wasn’t really feeling it as they say.
I was fortunate to see him relatively recently when he was in Florida. Along with my cousins, he stopped by to see my father (now in assisted living here) and my family. He was as always his warm and entertaining self. Although I had not seen him in a while, it felt as if I had just seen him the previous week. And I hope that if I live my life according to the role models that he as well as my many aunts, uncles, and grandparents were, I will see him again in the next life. I just wonder what accent he will use then!

Uncle Phil was more than an uncle he was a counselor, life coach and role model. I am grateful for the career guidance he gave me over 35 years ago that turned out to be the best advice I ever received. I have many wonderful memories of him from Santa to seeing him heading out in full dress uniform to a Knights of Columbus event. No matter who you were he treated you like one of the family and his generosity was endless. I'll never forget those Christnas Eve poker games and his non-stop one liners like "this hand looks like a foot". The best testimony I can give is that while typing this I had a huge smile on my face recalling the memory of Uncle Phil.

I have known Daddy Phil for over 40 years. I can remember going to Daddy Phil and Nanny Carol's house every year for Thanksgiving. Even though I was not married to Fran, Daddy Phil always welcomed me with open arms and treated me like family. I have very fond memories of watching football with Daddy Phil and "the guys" in the basement of his house. Daddy Phil was fun to be around and always made me laugh. He was kind, caring, and loving. I will truly miss such a wonderful person. If there is anyone who should take the express train to Heaven, it would be Daddy Phil.

Dear Caroline and family.
My deepest condolences to you all. especially you Caroline. The two of you were so close and everyone could see how much he loved you.
I will miss my friend Papa LaPlaca. He was such a sweet, kind, fun person and yes, always with a smile on his face. :-) Just like this photo here.
I really enjoyed my conversations with him. He could always make me laugh with his innocent "flirting", great sense of humor and we could chat for hours. I loved hearing about his time in the Navy and other adventures as a sales man. And now I know how to embrace myself and what to do if I ever need to jump off a ship into the ocean!
I will treasure my memories of him.
Salute Papa LaPlaca!
