Obituary of Katina Bassett
Please share a memory of Katina to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Katina "Tina" (Poulos) Bassett was born to Greek immigrant parents on Nov. 28, 1920, in Newark, New Jersey. She was christened and confirmed in the Greek Orthodox Church. Throughout her life, she often celebrated her culture and happily reminisced about her Greek roots.
Her family moved to Dover, New Hampshire, where she sang in the church choir. Katina met her future husband, Harold Bassett, when both were children. In 1940, after graduating from high school, Tina and Harold took a half-hour drive to Berwick, Maine, to be married. They remained together until Harold’s death in April 2000. The couple had four children: Ramona, Harold, Joan and Rebecca; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and recently, one great-great grandchild, all surviving.
During World War II, Tina’s husband joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego. Tina joined Harold on the West Coast with their two children, Ramona and Harold, and the family lived in an apartment while she worked as a "Rosie the Riveter." When Harold was called overseas later during the War, Tina and her two children moved back to New Hampshire.
When Harold returned, the family continued living in New England until relocating to Southern California in the 1950s. While living in Torrance, California, Tina worked for Douglas Aircraft, and later in life, she worked in branch banking.
In recent years, Tina lived near two of her daughters in Newhall, California. Her passion was to attend and dance at the many Greek festivals held in Southern California, mostly with one of her daughters, but occasionally venturing out on her own. She lived a life of her own as long as she could manage it.
Tina will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
