Life Story – Carol Cotten
Carol Jean Neilsen Cotten passed away November 12, 2013 at Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale, California at the age of 85. She was born in Beaver, Utah on December 2, 1927 to Warren Neilsen and Ruth Faux Neilsen. She married William L Cotten on May 1st 1954. To the union was born four sons, Robert, Brad, David and Tracy. She is survived by her four sons and seven grandchildren, Warren, Kayla, Nicole, Emily, Brady, Cory and Marissa Cotten.
Her fondest childhood memories were camping in the mountains south of Beaver with family and church friends. Her father owned the Ford Dealer in Beaver in the 1930’s until he passed in July of 1940. The War brought her mother (Ruth Neilsen) to move the family to Glendale, California in 1942 to support the war effort. Her brother Warren joined the Air Force and was a tail-gunner on a B-17 and was KIA over Holland on January 20, 1945.
Her faith and upbringing compelled Carol to always do the right thing. After the War, Carol got her B.A. in History from Glendale College in 1950. She then went to work for Bank of America until she retired in 1956 when Robert was born.
Carol moved to Walnut, California in 1955 after being married and when their house was completed. Her family was the most important thing in her life. This is where she attempted to raise her four sons. This was analogous to herding cats. While we were seeing how stupid we could be for our own entertainment she was participating in all the supporting activities we should have been applying ourselves towards. This included the Walnut School Board, Community Club, Cub and Boy Scouts, and little league baseball. When this did not work on us my parents went to Saudi Arabia in 1977 for ~3 years and left us to grow up on our own while they were gone. Tracy was still in grade school and went to Saudi with them.
They moved to La Canada in 1980 after they returned from Saudi Arabia. She ended up visiting all the US states and ~ 40 counties in her lifetime of travel. She ended up going around the world twice in her lifetime.
She traveled with Bill in their retirement years and visited family and locations of interest. She also was the Treasurer for the Verdugo Hill Hospital Women’s Council and Charity Boutique for over 15 years.
There will be a funeral at The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints in La Canada at 10 am Saturday November 16, 2013. Interment for Carol will be at the Mountain View cemetery in Beaver, Utah at 11 am Tuesday November 19, 2013.
